What are the Preventive Measures against Grape Sunburn?

Publish Time: 2022-12-09     Origin: Site

1. Increase the Distance between the Fruit and the Ground.

Try not to use the fence frame, but use the scaffolding, V-shaped frame, etc. to avoid the occurrence of sunburn caused by higher fruit surface temperature due to the fruit being too close to the ground.

2. Increase Vegetation to Avoid Surface Exposure.

The grass is planted between rows of grapes and straw is covered inside the rows to reduce surface exposure. In the daytime, it can not only reduce the direct sunlight on the ground to cause an excessive increase in surface temperature, but also reduce the evaporation of groundwater to maintain the appropriate soil moisture.

3. Strengthen the Management of Fertilizer and Water.

  • The plot with dry soil shall be irrigated in time. Irrigation should be carried out in the morning and evening when the ground temperature is low.

  • Improve the soil structure, deep plow the soil, and apply organic matter to improve the soil's ability to water and fertilizer conservation.

4. Cultivate Reasonable Tree Body and Leaf Curtain Structure.

  • Keep the branches evenly distributed, and conduct pinching and pruning in time.

  • For grapes cultivated in hedgerows, attention should be paid to selecting and retaining the ears with higher positions, keeping a certain number of leaves at the lower part of the ears, and reducing the exposure of the ears to reduce the occurrence of sunburn.

5. Strengthen Ventilation.

Around the vineyard, especially in the direction of the main air inlet and the back air inlet in summer, try not to have high walls or fences with obvious wind shielding effect, and do not plant tall crops between the rows of vines

6. Bagging Cultivation.

For varieties prone to sunburn, dark bags and double-layer bags with low light transmittance are recommended to effectively reduce sunburn.

Requirement:

  • Try to use fruit bags in large sizes.

  • Before bagging, the arrangement of ears should be strengthened, and the basal ears can be properly removed.

  • When bagging, fully stretch the fruit bag to make the fruit hang in the center of the bag as much as possible to avoid the ear clinging to the bag.

  • The fruit bagging shall not be carried out in the high-temperature time at noon, and shall be carried out in the early and late days when the temperature is low.

  • Bagging shall not be carried out in weather with severe temperature changes.
